Historical Background

Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints first arrived in Utah in 1847 as they migrated west to escape persecution. As more immigrants came, the church turned to handcarts as a less expensive way for members to travel. Between 1856 and 1860, almost 3,000 people came to Utah in ten handcart companies. This database contains lists of handcart pioneers from four companies, as well as some immigrants who came to Utah earlier.
