The recording of vital records began in South Dakota in 1905. Shortly after the commencement of this system people born before 1905 were allowed to create records of their births. Although many people filed these later birth records, many people did not. Therefore, the collection of birth records prior to 1905 is incomplete. This database contains all the records that were filed for births from 1918 and earlier. The earliest births recorded are from 1856. Information that may be found among these records includes the birth date, sex, mother's maiden name, father's name, and city or county of birth. This collection was obtained from the South Dakota Health Department.
