Historical Background

Following the Spanish-American War of 1898, Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States. On December 1, 1935, the census in this database was taken, although the compilation of the census carried into 1936. This database includes both an index and images of the census schedules. The records are in Spanish.

Beyond 1935
Puerto Rico was also counted in the 1910, 1920, 1930, and 1940 U.S. Federal Censuses. In 1900, only U.S. armed forces in Puerto Rico were included.
